How to Wash Clothes to Prevent Shrinking

A numbered routine of temperatures, cycles and first-wash handling that stops the 3-5% cotton shrinkage before it starts.

Step one is the label. Care labels typically set cotton blends at a 30-40°C machine wash, viscose at 30°C on a gentle cycle and wool at 30°C or dry clean. The temperature on the label is a ceiling, not a target.

Step two is the first wash. Unfinished cotton shrinks 3-5% on a first wash at 40°C, so pre-washing the fabric or garment removes most of the shrinkage before wear — the fit you keep is the post-wash fit.

Step three is colour. Washing fastness is graded 1-5 on the grey scale under ISO 105-C06; a rating of 4-5 means the dye barely bleeds at 40°C. Below that grade, wash cool and separately.

Step four is matching the cycle to the fibre: gentle for viscose, a wool program or dry cleaning for wool, and a standard machine wash for cotton blends within the 30-40°C band.

Sizing and fabric choice come first — see the Womens Size Conversion Chart and Fabric Weights for Dresses and Tops — and this routine keeps both intact after delivery.

  • Cotton blends: machine wash at 30-40°C
  • Viscose: 30°C on a gentle cycle
  • Wool: 30°C wool program or dry clean
  • Unfinished cotton: pre-wash to remove the 3-5% shrinkage
  • Dark colours: wash separately until a fastness grade of 4-5 is known
