Fabric Weights for Dresses and Tops

Grams per square metre is the single number that predicts season, drape and durability before the garment arrives.

T-shirt jersey spans two distinct bands. Summer weights run 120-180 g/m2 — light, close-draping, cool. Sweatshirting runs 220-300 g/m2, nearly double, built for structure and warmth.

Denim is quoted in ounces rather than grams: the usual 10-16 oz range converts to roughly 340-540 g/m2. A 10 oz denim behaves like a heavy shirting; 16 oz is rigid workwear weight.

Weight interacts with yardage. A knee-length woven dress takes about 2.0-2.5 m of 145 cm-wide fabric for EU sizes 34-44, and a full-length dress takes 3.0-3.5 m — so a heavier cloth multiplies into a noticeably heavier garment.

When a listing gives only a number, place it on the ladder: under 180 g/m2 is a summer top, 220-300 g/m2 is a sweatshirt, and anything from about 340 g/m2 upward is denim territory.

Pair the weight with the right size from the Womens Size Conversion Chart, then protect the cloth with the routine in How to Wash Clothes to Prevent Shrinking.
